Jews of the Pacific Coast
Ellen Eisenberg, Dwight and Margaret Lear Professor of American History at Willamette University
Sunday, January 23, 2011 1:00 pm
Where: Congregation Ahavath Achim, 3225 SW Barbur Blvd., Portland, OR
Description: From the California Gold Rush of 1849 to the explosion of population centers in the Southwest in the 1980s, Jews have played a significant role in shaping the Pacific West. In the process, they have reshaped themselves, as individuals and as communities. Through their mercantile networks and cultural innovations, their philanthropic institutions and political leadership, western Jews created a distinctive identity. Using historical photographs from her new book Ellen Eisenberg will explore the nature of the Jewish experience in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and the small towns of the West. She will explain the important differences among these cities, as well as highlighting the ways in which the western Jewish experience has echoed and deviated from the familiar story of American Jewish history.
About our Speaker: Ellen Eisenberg
Ellen Eisenberg has taught in the History Department at Willamette University since 1990, and was appointed Dwight and Margaret Lear Professor of American History in 2003. She holds a B.A. in American Studies from Carleton College and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Pennsylvania. Her current scholarship centers on Jews in the Pacific West and their relationships with other ethnic groups.
Her publications include Jewish Agricultural Colonies in New Jersey, 1882-1920; chapters in the anthologies Jewish Life in the American West and California Jews, and journal articles and monographs. The First to Cry Down Injustice? Western Jews and Japanese Removal during WWII was a National Jewish Book Award finalist. Jews of the Pacific Coast: Reinventing Community on America’s Edge, co-authored with Ava Kahn and Bill Toll, was released by the University of Washington Press earlier this year.
Time: Doors open by 1:00 pm for expert assistance with your genealogy problems. You are invited to send a short synopsis of your issue ahead of time to jgsoregon@gmail.com. Program will start at 1:30.

LATEST RELOCATION NEWS FOR GFO MEMBERS

GFO members: This message is to update members on the search for a new home for the GFO. In December, the relocation committee began working with Charlotte Larson, Senior Associate Broker at Urban Works Real Estate. She identified a wide range of properties to provide a picture of the current market for space meeting our criteria. A total of 17 properties, including several recommended by members, have been reviewed so far. In addition to drive-by reviews of all, four of those have been visited by the committee. A second set of possible properties will be identified in early January, and we will conduct further visits, analyses and comparisons. In addition to the committee, the GFO board will conduct visits to those that appear to meet our criteria most closely. We expect these processes to take place through February. We have received several suggestions from members, and if any members wish to identify any properties for investigation, please send them to Don Holznagel, dholznag@pacifier.com, not later than January 14, or leave word at the front desk at the GFO library. Criteria are available at the front desk as well.

GFO ILLINOIS GROUP- JANUARY 8th

Illinois Bounty Lands
Illinois is one of the states where soldiers were given land in payment for their services during wars.
That sounds ³clear and simple²...but there are many ins and outs, and even roundabouts, that effect---

who got the land...?
what land he received...?
where the land was...?
why things happened that way...?
when someone got the land...?
and how you can search for the land grant that your ancestor may have received.

The many farms in the area above did not all go to soldiers. Maybe your ancestor settled there...but became the owner without ever serving in the armed forces.

Or perhaps your ancestor did serve in the army...and yet never got any bounty lands. How could that have happened?

Join the Illinois Interest Group on Saturday, January 8th, for Duane Funk¹s presentation on the Illinois Bounty Lands and the answers to all of the above questions. Find out where to look to determine if your relative at one time owned land in this large section of Illinois...and whether or not he ever settled in that area. The paperwork you could find about this land may also tell you many other facts about his life, or that of his wife. The government asks many questions...and has kept many records...if you just know where to look.

Join the group on Saturday morning from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the Higgins Room at the GFO.

Duane will be waiting for a crowd of interested people!

JANUARY WRITERS' FORUM MEETING

Hello Aspiring Writers,

The Writers' Forum will meet on Saturday, January 8th, from 11:45 a.m.
until 1:45 p.m. at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon. We meet the second Saturday of each month.
Everyone is welcome, whether you have participated before or not. This is your chance to get started writing or improve your writing, whether you are writing for yourself, for others, or plan to enter the GFO writing contest this year.

We learn about good writing techniques -- write and read what we write to each other. Without exception, everyone who has participated in this group over the last six years writes better than they did when they started.

This year we are working with Roy Peter Clark's Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer published by Little, Brown and Company in 2006.
Each year we work with a book, but this particular book is making more difference In our writing than any other book we've worked with. We'll be working with Now we are working more specifically on language and in December we will be working with "Tool 19 Workshop: "Varying the Length of Paragraphs" from the Clark book.

Bring your lunch if you would like.
