The Master Genealogist Software Users Group

The Master Genealogist Software Users Group will be having our bimonthly meeting this Saturday. The meeting is in the Higgins room and starts at 9:30 and lasts till about noon.

We will be investigating using "Exhibits" in the program. And as usual, after the main presentation, we'll also discuss any non-related questions that attendees might want to bring up.

If you have the program on your laptop bring it, so you can follow along AND might also find another gem in the program that others have over looked!

This meeting marks the 21st anniversary of our group--no telling what that might stir up.

Anyway, the meeting should prove to be interesting as always. Come hang out at the Forum on a late Fall day. The Irish Group meets in the afternoon so make a day of it!

GFO ILLINOIS INTEREST GROUP

On Saturday, November 14th, 2009
the Topic for the Illinois Interest Discussion will be Finding Records that Confirm Death Information.

That means:
when you need to have documents that prove death info, where do you look?
There are at least ELEVEN sources of death information and we¹ll go over the list and be sure that everyone is aware of all eleven.

While we will emphasize where to look for these places in Illinois, the same eleven can be found in any state, so if you think this would be a good discussion for you, please join us!
And/or bring a friend with you.
Just come to the Higgins Room at the GFO on Saturday, November 14th, at 9:30 to 11:30 and join right in.
The leader of the day will be Kristy, here visiting from Illinois.
I hope to see you there, and to get a chance to say hello!

GFO WRITERS' FORUM NOVEMBER 14

Hi Writers,

We had October off, so hopefully you used that time to write something! Our next meeting is November 14th, from 11:45 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon. We meet the second Saturday of each month.
Everyone is welcome, whether you have participated before or not. This is your chance to get started writing or improve your writing, whether you are writing for yourself, for others, or plan to enter the GFO writing contest this year.
We learn about good writing techniques -- write and read what we write to each other. Without exception, everyone who has participated in this group over the last five years writes better than they did when they started.
This year we are working with Roy Peter Clark's Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer published by Little, Brown and Company in 2006.
Each year we work with a book, but this particular book is making more difference In our writing than any other book we've worked with. We'll be working with Tool 11 Workshop: "Prefer the Simple over the Technical" this Saturday.

Bring your lunch if you would like.

GFO'S ILLINOIS INTEREST GROUP, SEPTEMBER 12

The Illinois Interest Group will be back in action on Saturday, September 12th. The topic will be IRAD in Illinois.

In case you are in the large group of people who do not know about IRAD...
it stands for "Illinois Regional Archives Depositories" and is the gift of the State of Illinois to the Genealogy & History researchers of the world.Choose the right IRAD and place a phone call or a letter (for some reason they have not mastered emails), and that will do the trick. Call and ask for the information you need. They will tell you what the chances are, seek it out for you, and mail it to you. If copies must be made, they will send you a bill (which will not exceed $5 without an OK from you ahead of time.)

I hope that you are now intrigued. I also hope that, if you think IRAD might be of help to you, you will come to the meeting. It may be that "your"
state, even if not Illinois, would have records you should be searching out...if you only knew they existed...so you could find out about such records by listening to the kinds of records that Illinois has.

Just show up at 9:30 in the Higgins Room and you will be welcomed in. Leave your name and email address...or write to to ask questions or get on the Illinois Interest mailing list.

The speaker for the day will be Harlene Patterson, our intrepid organizer

WRITERS' FORUM-SEPTEMBER12TH

The GFO Writers' Forum will meet Saturday at 11:45-1:45 in GFO's Higgins Room. This fall the group will meet the second Saturday of each month.Everyone is invited whether you have participated before or not; whether you are writing for yourself or others. Perhaps you want to enter the GFO Writing Contest this year.

This year the group will be using Roy Peter Clark's "50 Essential Strategies For Every Writer", published by Little, Brown & Co. in 2006. We will be working with rule #10; "Cut Big, Then Small" this Saturday.

Bring lunch if you want.

Planning for a New Home in 2010

To make way for the MAX extension to Milwaukie, the GFO library and offices must move in the summer or fall of 2010, and we expect to select a new home about May of that year. The first two opportunities for members to discuss GFO needs and indicate their ideas and priorities are offered in the Higgins room on the following dates.

March 21, 1:00 p.m., hosted by the Irish Interest Group.
March 28, 2:30 p.m., after the British Interest Group meeting.

Any GFO Member may attend either meeting, and additional opportunities will be scheduled in later months. The meetings are planned for up to an hour, including time for one-on-one discussions. A TriMet representative will participate. Questions? Contact Don Holznagel (dholznag@pacifier.com).
