Steve Morse: Getting Ready for the 1940 Census: Searching without a Name Index
When the 1940 census is released in April 2012, it will not have a name index. Finding people in the census will involve searching by location instead until an index is completed.
The census is organized by Enumeration Districts (EDs). The location needs to be converted to an ED before the census can be accessed. The One-Step website contains numerous tools for obtaining EDs. This talk will present the various tools and show circumstances in which each can be used. It will also demonstrate a tutorial quiz for determining the best tool to use in each specific situation.
The Jewish Marriage Contract (Ketubah)
Vital records (birth, marriage, death) have always been a valuable source of family information and sought after by genealogists. The Jewish Marriage Contract (Ketubah) is no exception. This paper discusses what is contained in the Jewish marriage contract, tells what it really means, and provides information that can be useful to family historians.
Stephen Morse is an amateur genealogist who has researched his Russian-Jewish origins. Steve is the creator of the One-Step Website (www.stevemorse.org) for which he has received many awards. The website continues to evolve and now includes over 100 web-based tools ranging from genealogical searches to astronomical calculations to last-minute bidding on e-bay. In his other life Morse is a computer professional with a doctorate degree in electrical engineering. He has held various research, development, and teaching positions, authored numerous technical papers, written four textbooks, and holds four patents. He is best known as the architect of the Intel 8086 (the granddaddy of today's Pentium processor), which sparked the PC revolution 30 years ago.

Note: parking in the lot is available, but not abundant. We strongly encourage carpooling and public transportation. According to Tri-Met, bus 12 runs every 15 minutes on Sundays and bus 44 every half hour. Street parking is available off Barbur just north and south of the building. If you are able to leave parking lot spots for those with more difficulty walking, please do.
Cost to JGSO Members: $18 for lectures and lunch
Cost to those who are not members of JGSO: Lunch and lectures $25. Morning lecture only is $10.
If you are not yet a member of JGSO for 2012 and want to register at member’s cost, please submit a membership form for new and renewing members. It will be attached to this email.

GFO COMPUTER INTEREST GROUP
Just a reminder that the Computer Special Interest Group will be having our bi-monthly meeting this coming Saturday February 18th from 9:30 to 11:30 AM in the rear of the library. (the Higgins Area?)
In accord with our objective to investigate genealogical programs, a presentation will be made by Sue LeBlanc of the PAF program. (Personal Ancestral File which is free and is available via the LDS website
familysearch.org) This will be a great opportunity to get an overview of this widely used software. Handouts will be available.
After a lunch break, the Master Genealogist Software Users Group meeting will start at Noon and go til 2 PM. The program's publisher has finally released a new version (8) with many improvements. We will be taking a "look under the hood" at some of them. As always there will be a question and (hopefully) answer session as well. If anyone is has already found new features that are helpful and would like to share that discovery I encourage you to attend. This should be an interesting meeting.

GFO Illinois Group
Be at the GFO Library next Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m.
There you will hear Duane Funk tell the group about one of the largest ethnic groups to move to Illinois.
If you have German background, you will learn about those who immigrated to the mid-west area.
If you have German background, you will learn about why many who immigrated chose Illinois as a home.
If you have German background, you will learn about contributions the Germans gave to Illinois.
(And if you don’t have Illinois background, you will still see how your German ancestors chose their home, and contributed to their new home...by what is called “transfer of learning”...if Illinois offered particular advantages to the immigrant (not only Germans) that caused immigration to Illinois’ collar states of the mid-west. If it was true in Illinois, it very likely relates in your “home” state and with your nationalities.)
The Illinois Interest Group welcomes not only its members, but also its friends, and those who could become their friends. If you have any interest in German immigration, settlement, and contributions, join the group.

All-Ireland Cultural Society of Oregon (AICS) will host a genealogy lecture with the folks from the Ulster Historical Foundation (Ancestry Ireland) in NE Portland during St. Patrick's week. Tea, soda bread and light desserts will be provided.
Admission is $20, and the AICS is extending a $5 discount is to all GFO members. Seats are limited to only 45 folks because of space so book quickly if you are interested in attending.
