IRISH FESTIVAL COMING

To all GFO Irish Interest group members,
I thought you might like to know about the following event:
Irish festival comes to Portland, Oregon
Featuring Irish Sean-nos Dancing!

What: 5th Annual Sean-nós Northwest Festival
When: February 17th, 18th & 19th 2012
Where: Multnomah Village, Portland, OR
Tickets: $35 daily pass, $60 weekend pass
Website: www.seannos.org

The 5th annual Sean-nós Northwest festival returns to Portland, Oregon for the third weekend of February 2012. SNNW aims to promote and educate the community at large on the sean-nós or "old-style" of interpretive percussive dance and unaccompanied song. These art forms, both emanating from the Irish Gaelic speaking districts of Ireland, are rather apart from the stage craft of the many ubiquitous Irish dance shows touring the globe today. You are invited to come and witness the remarriage of music, song and dance during this weekend-long celebration featuring workshops, performances, and sessions open to the public!

The festival opens Friday night with a dance at the PPAA, 618 SE Alder Street and continues Saturday and Sunday with events held at the Multnomah Arts Center, 7688 SW Capitol Hwy and the Lucky Labrador Public House, 7675 SW Capitol Hwy. The festival will conclude with a concert on Sunday, 7pm at the Lucky Labrador.

GFO WRITERS' FORUM

Hello Aspiring Writers,

The Writers' Forum will meet on Saturday, January 14th, from 11:45 a.m.until 1:45 p.m. at the Genealogical Forum of Oregon. We meet the second Saturday of each month.

We are going to have a discussion comparing and contrasting approaches in Revolutionary War articles in the December 2011 GFO Bulletin:

Encounter at Point Pleasant: The First Revolutionary War Battle? By
Carol Ralston Surrency (p. 12)

The Revolutionary War Patriots of the Amos Tidd Family by Susan LeBlanc (p. 17)

Columns:

Relics ~ Becoming American: Orikany and the German Palatine by by Harvey Steele (p. 35)

Story Teller ~ The Battle of Blue Licks: Last Battle of the
Revolutionary War by Judith Scott (p. 38)

Everyone is welcome, whether you have participated before or not. This is your chance to get started writing or improve your writing, whether you are writing for yourself or for others.

We learn about good writing techniques -- write and read what we write to each other. Without exception, everyone who has participated in this group over the last seven years writes better than they did when they started.

Bring your lunch if you would like.

GFO DNA INTEREST GROUP

Just a reminder to all of you....
I had planned on showing you the new 2.0 version of the personal webpages on Family Tree DNA, but just a couple days ago, they went live for every tester to see. Regardless, we'll view them and practice using some of the features.

We'll also update you on the "breaking news" with 23andMe.

See you there
Emily

Reminder from: NW-ISOGG Yahoo! Group

Date: Tuesday January 10, 2012 Time: 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Location: Genealogical Forum of Oregon Library
Street: 2505 SE 11th Suite B-18 (Basement Suite)
City State Zip: Portland OR 97202
Phone: 503-963-1932
Notes: January's meeting will be jam-packed! Please be on time as the full two hours will be needed.

The following topics are to be covered:
1. A short review of the events at the Family Tree DNA International Conference.
2. Review of a new DNA book.
3. Preview of myFTDNA 2.0 webpages
4. Time to explore the new personal webpages of Family Tree DNA using a handout to guide you.
5. Optional: Explore 23andMe website. (Bring your password)

Using the society's computers or your own laptop, Emily, Tim Jansen and David Reynolds will assist members with use of the Family Tree DNA and the 23andMe personal webpages. These pages will include test results for the Y-DNA, mtDNA and the Family Finder Test for FTDNA and the Ancestry test for 23andMe.

If you have tested with FTDNA, bring your kit number and code to explore your own pages. If you have not, you can view kit information that will be provided.

Due to the size of the room and the number of computers, please bring your own laptop if you have one. You may also share computers or watch someone else.

This will also be of interest if you plan on testing later with either company.

Donations to cover the cost of the handout are accepted.

Bring a friend!
